We use ours several times a week to make steel-cut oats, which is to regular oatmeal what king salmon is to fish sticks. Steel cut oats takes 45 minutes of careful attention to cook, so instead we load the rice cooker the night before, use the porridge setting and set the time to 6:30. We wake up to the wonderful aroma of perfectly cooked oats. That's worth the hundred bucks right there.



This cooker is built to last for years of daily use. The bowl is heavy gauge steel with a very good nonstick surface. Computerized control means excellent results no matter what rice or other grain you're using (we also use it for tabouli, quinoa, lentils -- it will even bake cakes and souffles.) There's a fast setting for perfectly good 20 minute rice; standard settings cook a bit more slowly but really bring the flavor and texture to the peak. If you haven't tasted rice from a computerized rice cooker, you're in for a treat. Panasonic is a very good brand, less expensive with better build quality and more features than the low-end Zojurushis in my opinion.



Just a terrific little machine, and a great help if you're trying to eat healthy.

We purchased this rice cooker through Amazon as a Lightening Deal in late February 2009 for $99. We had been researching rice cookers for a couple months and had decided that this was the one that we wanted, but didn't feel comfortable paying the $150 price tag. However, for $99, we jumped on the deal.



In the three weeks that we have had this rice cooker, we have used it nearly every day. I love being able to throw in some white or brown rice when I get home from work, head out for my run, and have the rice ready for me when I get back. Just need to whip up a stir fry, and dinner is ready! The quality of the rice is also much better than the quality of rice cooked on the stove. I had some cheap medium grain rice that we found to be quite dry and tasteless when cooked on the stove, however, this rice cooker seems to be made of magic, because it came out of it soft and fluffy, with just the perfect amount of "sticky".



We also use the timer feature several times a week to have hot steel cut oats ready when we wake up. Sleeping in on the weekend? That's great! Just set the timer for the earliest you possibly think that you'll wake up and the cooker will go to a "keep warm" cycle and keep your oatmeal hot and perfect until you're ready for it. If you are using the cooker for steel cut oats, I recommend using two of the rice cooker's supplied cups (not actually a cup measurement) of oats, and filling the rice cooker's pan to the 5 cup mark for white rice, and then setting the cooker to the "porridge" setting. Your oats will turn out perfect every time, with only a minute's preparation the night before!



The best part about this rice cooker is clean up, however. The rice pan is non-stick and we find that, if we're in a hurry (such as switching the cooker over from rice for dinner to oats for the next morning), we can even just wait for the rice residue to dry, and then it all flakes off and can easily be removed with a dry paper towel. I've never seen non-stick work this well!



We had never owned a rice cooker before and were a bit leary of paying the high price tag, but it's been entirely worth it. In fact, the rice cooker now has a permanent place on our kitchen counter, we use it so often!

We have had the older model (National SRMM10N) since 2001 and it's still kicking. I have used it to steam foods and make porridge too. We usually use the "quick" function to make rice so that it's done faster (20 min or so).



After years of abuse the inside pot has been retired...I just ordered the replacement part from Panasonic: http://www.pstc.panasonic.com/EpartR/PartsListChoice.asp and it arrived in 4 working days. I guess you're not supposed to use metal on this non-stick surface, but sometimes we get lazy or forget. The part number for anyone else who needs one for this older model is ARE50M592A.



I debated on buying a new rice cooker vs. getting a new inside pot and thought that it would be a waste to toss a rice cooker that still works great for that reason. Let's see how long this baby really lasts!

There is no question that this makes excellent rice. The instructions for making porridge (grits, oatmeal, etc.) make it a little hard to come out as good as the rice. The only real gripe I have about this is the inner pot. It scratched after only about 3 uses. I only use the plastic paddle it comes with, so I am a bit perplexed as to how this happened. I went to the Zojirushi website to order a replacement and was astonished to see that this inner pot costs near $50 to replace!

My wife said I was crazy to spend so much just to cook rice. That was until she tried the rice! When she tried the oatmeal, she started telling all of our friends and family about how incredible it is. We've had this machine for 4 months and use it several times per week for both rice and oatmeal.



Rice:

It makes the ultimate rice every time. The best feature is that it keeps the rice warm and perfect for up to 8 hours. It does this by having an excellent seal between the lid and the bowl, plus very accurate temperature control. We picked up a 25 lb. bag of Kokuho Rose pre-washed rice at Costco for something like $0.50 per lb. My family loves it!



Rice Pudding:

Italian rice or Arborio rice - We made this over the Christmas holidays. Just follow the recipe on the bag using the white rice cycle. Serve with a little butter, sugar, and cinnamon, it's heaven.



Oatmeal:

This is my personal favorite. I always wanted to try Irish oats but was put off by the time consuming process of cooking and stirring. This cooker makes oats effortlessly. (By the way, from www.foodsubs.com/GrainOats.html, steel-cut oats = Irish oats = Scotch oats = pinhead oats = coarse-cut oats = steel-cut oatmeal = Irish oatmeal = Scotch oatmeal = pinhead oatmeal = coarse-cut oatmeal = porridge oats = porridge oatmeal. These are whole oat grains chopped into small pieces. They're a little bit chewier than rolled oats, grain aficionados often prefer them for hot oatmeal cereals and muesli.)



To make oatmeal, put the cooker on the porridge cycle. You should only cook 1 to 1.25 cups of Irish oats per batch, more than this (or less) have caused my batches to boil, which puts oats in the steam vent. To prevent this, I use the porridge cycle combined with the pre-washed rice setting, this gives the oats a few extra minutes to soak. That seems to minimize the tendency of the oats to boil over. Another option is to let the oats soak overnight, then there's a lot less "free" water to boil over. My last choice for preventing boilover is to stir the mixture halfway through the cycle. Guaranteed to work but I usually forget. When it does boil over, it's not impossible to clean the oats out of the steam vent. But it is a pain.



1 cup of dry oats makes 2 to 3 servings;

add 2 cups +3 oz of water = 19 ozs



1.25 cups of dry oats makes 3 to 4 servings;

add 3 cups of water = 24 ozs.



If you don't get to the porridge as soon as the cycle is complete, it is still great to eat for an hour or so, you'll just have to mix some milk into the result. Add pure maple syrup for a taste that is pure luxury.



We get steel-cut oats in a 70 oz. can from store.honeyvillegrain.com. Six cans cost $34.50 delivered. The cans are hermetically sealed and advertised to last for years, but we're already into the third can.



Build quality on this machine is number 1. The bowl is the best too, rice almost never sticks to it. If it does, just soak it in warm water for a while and it will dissolve. Oatmeal literally falls out of the bowl after it cools off.

Cant find any negative things to say about this made in Japan Zojirushi rice cooker. Make sure when you buy zojirushi items that you get the made in japan version. I know for sure that ZAC10, ZAC18, KCC05, VBC-18 are all made in Japan. The others like MYC, PC models are made in China. I like these much better because they have the legendary quality of made in Japan models. It makes all sorts of rice and you can also make dishes inside the cooker. I also like to steam things like dumplings and chinese bread.

The lid on this lets steam escape from sides which makes a mess all over the counter and on the handles of cooker. I tried it twice then got a replacement cooker which did the same thing. I contacted Farberware both times to see if there was a problem with the cooker the first time I was told I may have a lemon the second I hoped they could send me a new lid that would hold the steam in and was told it was on back order and I should return the steamer to the store.
